Because the Ministry of Education requires that you read something you enjoy, for pleasure, and because I have to figure out a way to have you prove it to me, and because you need practice in formal literary writing and public speaking, you get to do a book report and a book talk. Consider yourself lucky--I used to have students do a book report every month. You're getting off lightly! You will do a book report in Term One and a book talk in Term Two. TERM ONE:
The book report assignment is below. You may hand in the completed book report well before the due date if you like; doing so will give you a chance for a re-do if you are not happy with your achievement on this assignment.
Parental Permission form (print this out, have your parent fill it in, and attach it to your book report) I cannot accept a book report without a parent/guardian's note saying that you are allowed to read the book!
Marking for this assignment is as follows:
1. Character: /3
2. Setting /1
3. Theme /1
Paragraph or composition 1: /30 (general marking rubric)
Paragraph or composition 2: /30 (general marking rubric) TERM TWO:
Your book talk is a similar assignment, but it is presented in front of the class rather than written out. It includes a visual of some sort. The assignment and marking rubric are below. NOTE: No two students in my English 9 classes may submit a book talk on the same book. Choose your book early, and register it with me so you are sure to get your first choice. These will be presented just after Christmas. Exact date TBA.
